Beauty Cabinet Essentials

Everyone’s skin has a story.

From wearing way too much makeup in our teen years, to simply not knowing the correct products to use for our skin type, I’m sure we’ve all given our complexions a real rollercoaster ride when it comes to skincare.

Thankfully, most of us also have an ‘ah ha’ moment when we come across a product, regime and ritual that works best for us and makes our skin glow with radiance.

For Perth-based influencer, Amy Zempilas, this ‘ah ha’ moment came in the form of a recommendation from a caring friend.

We chatted with her about her skincare journey, her beauty cabinet essentials and her biggest skincare milestones.

How would you describe your skincare story, and what have you viewed as the biggest milestones in this journey?

When I was 14, I developed a really bad problem skin. It was red and blotchy and made me extremely self-conscious. I tried anything and everything I could to make my skin better. My skin continued to be sensitive and problematic throughout my twenties and well into my thirties, and it really affected my self-confidence.

Then in 2012, I was introduced to Sodashi. That was my biggest skincare milestone moment!

I purchased a few products to begin with, noticed a huge difference with my skin straight away - and I haven't looked back!

Along your journey, which skincare principles/trends have worked for you?

For me, the basic skincare principles have always worked.

  1. Making sure I take my make-up off before bed. This is such a simple tip, but oh so effective and makes for beautiful, glowing and healthy skin!
  2. Invest in a great moisturiser. Once you find one you love and that works for your skin – hold onto it! An effective moisturiser is worth its weight in gold.
  3. Exfoliate gently to renew and refresh the skin once a week.

Is using natural skincare and beauty products important to you?

It's really important that the majority of my daily skincare is pure, natural and gentle. Our skin is our largest organ and what’s applied to the skin is absorbed by the body and it makes sense to me to use mostly pure skincare. We are exposed to so many harmful toxins and chemicals in our everyday lives, so it’s wonderful to counteract that by keeping my skincare as clean as possible.

When were you introduced to Sodashi and by whom?

I was introduced to Sodashi by Haley Thompson who at the time owned an all organic and natural online beauty store called Peachy Clean. I'll be forever grateful to her.

What are your Sodashi beauty cabinet essentials and why?

I LOVE the Calming Rose Face Mist - it's so soothing and hydrating. I use it throughout the day as a little pick me up.

I also love the Clay Cleanser with Lime, Enzyme Face Polish (I keep it in the shower and use it once or twice a week), Calming Face and Neck Moisturiser, Nourishing Repair Treatment (the BEST for dry skin!), Gentle Repair White Clay Mask for any mini breakouts I have and the Holy Grail of skincare - Samadara Age-Defying Elixir (a top-shelf face oil) - it's so good it should be called the Elixir of Youth! It's worth every cent.

What is your essential skincare ritual?

I keep my skincare pretty simple. I think if you use beautiful and effective products you can keep your skincare routine minimal.

  • I always take my make up off before bed.
  • I use an effective moisturiser.
  • I exfoliate a couple of times a week
  • I use a treatment or mask once a week - usually on a Sunday morning while I'm vacuuming or doing the washing.
  • I also drink loads of water - I think it's one of the easiest and best things you can do for your skin.
